Hi Rod,

Thanks for posting! I really like hearing how you are maneuvering in this economy without cheapening your work. And you're right, dropping your price does cheapen your brand.

Nice idea to offer a payment plan on signs! Yes, it is a way to help people get what they need without impacting their pocket book too much - and a way they can get it from your shop instead of someone else's.

Cheers!

Hi Mark
I totally agree with not dropping your prices. It's so important not to cheapen your product but more importantly not to cheapen your brand.
I'm in Townsville, Australia & our economy in certain sectors is still going fairly strong but alot of people I talk to who are finding it tough are not doing anything to help there own cause.

The way we have approached any type of downturn is to make sure you excel with your service & quality. We try & up sell another smaller product when selling a larger product to give the customer the impression of added value.

The other great way to get people to spend a little more is to break it down to a 3-6 monthly payment plan. Most people then only view it as a month to month purchase rather than a lump sum payment. That's why we bought Estimate, because we could pay it off(not to mention what a great product it is).

Sometimes positive thinking can result in extra sales.

Cheers

Mark,

I just found your blog through some traffic referrals to ours (Working Smarter) and I have to say that I am really impressed with it! Your passion for your product and the entire signage industry is very impressive; in addition you've provided some robust, useable business tidbits in a way in that is entertaining to read.

I went ahead and added a subscription to my RSS reader. Well done!

David, thanks for posting! The article was very interesting. I think it's absolutely crucial for accountability to be the watchword going forward, not only for the choices that are about to be made with the bailout money, but also as the prism through which to view the past.

Here's a interesting <a href="http://blog.smartdraw.com/archive/2009/02/20/video-cartoon-makes-it-easy-to-understand-the-credit-crisis.aspx" rel="nofollow">cartoon that makes it easy to understand the credit crisis</a> that I found in my internet travels.

I agree with your take on the damage done by lowering prices. A real eye opener when you crunch the numbers and what you actually lose by lowering just a little. Scary.

Your assessment of how our economy will rebound I believe is flawed. We probably will see an upswing this year but that will only be a temporary thing when we find out what happens when the printing presses go wild.
